GP Rating means General purpose Rating. GP Rating candidates are those who have been trained in both Deck and Engine Room tasks. Such ratings may be employed either in deck department or Engine department according to the needs of the company. They perform tasks related to Seamanship, Cargo handling, Maintenance work on deck, Operation and maintenance of Machinery. This Course ensured higher employ-ability of the Indian seafarers in world market.
GP Rating is a six months residential course approved by D.G Shipping (Govt of India). GP Rating syllabus includes combined study of Deck and Engineering subjects. This course will cover all aspects of the seafaring profession (Deck and Engine), which also include swimming, physical drills, workshop training, rope and mast climbing, lifesaving appliances usage, fire fighting exercises and ship visits etc. After the training, external examinations is conducted by Board of Examination of Seafarers (BES) under D.G Shipping (Govt of India).
Students who successfully pass the examination (BES) are issued INDIAN CDC and are eligible for ship jobs around the world. The students can join ship as trainee OS (Ordinary Seaman) / trainee fitter / trainee oiler / trainee engine room cadet (for Diploma holders). The G.P.Rating candidate will be able to work in all seamanship activities on-board at deck side & as well as at Engine side. With further Sea-service, they will be promoted as, Able-Bodied Seamen / Engine Fitter, Bosun, etc.
They can also be promoted to officer Level with certain sea service (36 months) and qualification requirements. There are wide job opportunities for Indian Seamen all over the world.
Those candidates who want to pursue career in Merchant Navy as soon as passing 10th Standard can join GP Rating course Or NCV Deck cadet Course. These courses help the candidates to pursue career in Merchant Navy and help in financial growth after 6 months of Pre-sea training.
There is no Common Entrance Test for GP Rating. But some institutes conduct their own test to select the candidates.

Use of corrective lenses for eyesight is permitted but the maximum permissible limits, at entry, are 6/12 in each eye or 6/9 in better eye and 6/18 in other eye for distant unaided vision. Color blindness is not permitted.

Written /Interview/ Medical examination.
GP Rating Course duration:
GP rating course is a 6 months residential course.

GP Rating Salary:
In training period as an Ordinary seaman gets 200-300$(Rs 12000-18000), after 9 months of sea service as an Ordinary seaman candidate gets Watch keeping certificate then candidate gets promoted as Able bodied seaman(AB) salary 1000-1500$ .Further experience makes him Bosun Salary(2000-2500$)and also officer (3000-3500$) if candidate has required qualifications.

NCV Deck Cadet
Approved By D.G Shipping (Govt of India)
Duration Six Months Course Commences on 1st February and 1st August Every Year.
This is six months residential course approved by D.G Shipping (Govt of India).
The syllabus includes Deck Operations for Dredgers, Tugs and OSVs. After the training, internal examinations is conducted by the institute. Students who successfully pass the examination are issued INDIAN CDC and are eligible for ship jobs around the world. The students can join ship as NCV Cadets.

IMU ADMISSION PROCESS:
All admissions to the various UG and PG programmes of the IMU and its Affiliated Institutes will be through All-India Common Entrance Tests (IMU-CET) conducted every year, usually in the month of May/June. For Diploma in nautical science (DNS COURSE) it is conducted twice a year (i) May/June. (ii).Dec/Jan.Qualifying in IMU-CET is mandatory for getting admission in IMU Campuses or IMU affiliated institutes.
There will be a Separate Common Entrance Test (CET) for the MBA programmes. Another Common Entrance Test (CET) for the M.Tech programmes.
Candidates who are shortlisted based on CET scores will be called for Counselling at designated IMU Campuses and will involve verification of original mark sheets and certificates, physical fitness clearance, and allotment of seats in the IMU Campuses or Affiliated Institutes.
NOTE : Admissions to Diploma in Nautical Science leading to B.Sc. (Applied Nautical Science) programme in Affiliated Institutes are open only to “sponsored candidates”, (Sponsored candidates are those who has given Sponsorship test conducted by shipping companies/manning companies and got qualified in the test and have the company sponsorship letter).

A pass in Plus-two (12th Standard) or its equivalent, with minimum 60% aggregate in Maths, Physics and Chemistry group and at least 50% marks in English in both 10th and 12th Standard.
Age limit:
Maximum age limit is 25 years at the time of commencement of course.
Medical standards:
Should be physically fit for sea and should meet the medical standards laid by the Director General of shipping.
Eyesight/Vision:
Use of corrective lenses for eyesight is permitted but the maximum permissible limits, at entry, are 6/12 in each eye or 6/9 in better eye and 6/18 in other eye for distant unaided vision. Color blindness is not permitted.
B.Sc Maritime Science :

How to Join Merchant Navy After Graduation ?
PG Programmes :
MBA Programmes :
- Two-year full-time MBA programme in Port & Shipping Management.
- Two-year full-time MBA programme in International Transportation & Logistics Management.
For the above two MBA programmes candidate should have a bachelor’s degree in any discipline with 50% marks from Recognized universities (45% Marks in case of SC/ST).
M.Tech Programmes :
- M.Tech in Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering.
- M.Tech in Dredging and Harbour Engineering.
For the admission in above two M.Tech programmes Candidate should have Graduate Engineering in Mechanical/Civil/Aeronautical/Marine/Naval Architecture or Equivalent with 60% aggregate.
PGDME :
Degree in Mechanical Engineering / Mechanical & Automation Engineering / Naval Architecture, from a College approved by All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) or the I.I.T. Candidates with a Bachelor’s Degree in (Naval Architecture & Ocean Engineering) from IMU are also eligible for admission to this course.
Graduate Marine Engineering (GME).
Graduate Marine Engineering (GME) Course is a one year Pre sea Training course for Graduates those who have completed BE /B Tech in Mechanical Engineering or Naval Architecture. GME is a course leading to Class IV Marine Engineer Officer Certificate of competency, awarded by the Ministry of shipping Government of India, after six months of sea service, enabling the cadets to become Marine Engineers on board Merchant Navy Vessels (Ships) anywhere in the world. GME Course is the gateway for Mechanical & Naval Architecture Graduates to enter into Merchant Navy.
Eligibility Criteria For Graduate Mechanical Engineering(GME).
Educational Qualifications:
Candidate should have B.E/B.Tech Mechanical Engineering or Naval Architecture With 50% Marks in Final year. Candidates should have obtained at least 50% marks in English at 10th & 12th Standard or Degree Course. College must have AICTE /UGC Approval.
Age limit:
Maximum 28 Years at the commencement of the course.

Electro Technical Officer (ETO).
Electro Technical Officer (ETO) Course is a Four months Pre sea Training course for Graduates those who have completed Diploma or B.Tech in Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Electrical & Electronics Engineering, Electronics & Telecommunication/ Communication Engineering or Electronics and Instrumentation or equivalent. ETO Course acts as a gateway for the Electrical & Electronics Graduates to enter into Merchant Navy.
Eligibility Criteria For ETO Course.
Educational Qualifications:
- The diploma/degree courses must have been recognized by any State or Central Government or the AICTE.
- Passed three years Diploma with 60% marks or four years Degree including lateral entry with 50 % marks in Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Electrical & Electronics Engineering, Electronics & Telecommunication/ Communication Engineering or Electronics and Instrumentation or equivalent.
- Passed 10+2 with Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics or equivalent vocational education course and English as a separate subject, with minimum 50% marks in English language at 10th or 12th or Diploma or Degree level.
- The Directorate has been receiving many representations from the Diploma/Degree holders who have completed their Diploma/Degree successfully, however, not obtained 50% marks in English language either in 10th or 12th standard but have scored 60% in Diploma and 50% in Degree courses. Directorate has examined such cases and permitted admission of such candidates for ETO course who could not score 50% marks in English at 10th or 12th standard but have scored 60% in Diploma and 50 % in Degree courses, will be eligible if the medium of learning in Diploma/Degree courses is in English language subject to fulfilling all other eligibility norms and medical fitness.
Age limit: Maximum Age of 30 years at the commencement of the course.

How to Join Merchant Navy after Diploma ?
Diploma in Marine Engineering (DME Course).
This is a two year Pre-sea training course for Diploma Holders (DME) leading to Class IV Marine Engineer Officer Certificate of competency, awarded by the Directorate General of Shipping (Government of India), after six months of sea service, enabling the cadets to become Marine Engineers on board Merchant Naval ships anywhere in the world. This course is strictly residential.

Candidate should Possess Diploma in Mechanical/Marine/Naval Architecture/Electrical/Electric & Electronics Engineering with minimum of 50% in Final Year and minimum 50% marks in English at 10th or 12th Standard or diploma courses.
